Your list of autodidacts is woefully inadequate - what about the Greatest of the greats? Charles Darwin, Gregor Mendel, Faraday... the list is endless! Every man or woman who made a singular breakthrough - Curie, Nigfhtingale, Pankhurst et al +++especially in the scientific domains was of course an automathy/autodidact.  In fact, every breakthrough from a contemporary belief or an established academic text-book was the result of a thinking, observant, questioning person rejecting established, unquestioned beliefs and setting out, alone, to find better answers.  I have been trying to get a well-thought-through, scientifically precise piece on who are the real pioneers but - guess what - no-one will publish it!!   NB  EVERY PIONEER IS AN AUTOMATH...</description>
